ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Wildfires intensified across southern Europe on Wednesday after a nightlong battle to protect the perimeter of Greece’s third-largest city, with at least three more deaths reported in Spain, Turkey and Albania.

Greece, Spain, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey all experienced wildfires as a combination of drought and high temperatures helped spread the blazes. Evacuations have been carried out, with Serbia calling a state of emergency over the fires.

At least three people have died during a heatwave that is driving dozens of wildfires across southern Europe, forcing thousands to leave their homes. Red heat alerts have been issued in parts of Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and the Balkans, warning of health risks as temperatures rise above 40C (104F).
