Silvia Pinal, who has died aged 93, was one of the most glamorous stars of Mexican cinema; in Europe she was best known for her roles in three films by Luis Buñuel, especially Viridiana, a film that caused a scandal when it was released in 1961.

During a career that spanned seven decades, Pinal gained international fame for toplining 1960s classics written and directed by Luis Buñuel.

As her star status began to cross borders, Pinal cemented her international acclaim with a trilogy of films by surrealist filmmaker Luis Buñuel.

Pinal appeared in movies with Mexican comics like Cantinflas and Tin Tan, heartthrobs like Pedro Infante, and starred in Luis Buñuel’s 1961 film “Viridiana.”

One of the last stars of Mexican cinema’s mid-century golden age, she appeared in films including Luis Buñuel’s “Viridiana” and was later elected to Congress.
