Skenes, who had a 1.96 ERA in 23 starts for the Pirates and struck out 170 in 133 innings, also finished third in NL Cy Young Award voting.

Skenes beat out Jackson Chourio of the Milwaukee Brewers and Jackson Merril of the San Diego Padres for the NL Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year award. Skenes had 23 first-place votes to finish first, while Merril finished second with seven first-place votes.

Skenes is the first NL starting pitcher to win the award since another flame-throwing righty, the New York Mets’ Jacob deGrom, won in 2014.
