Unai Emery has promised not to take any undue risk with Emi Martinez after revealing the Villa goalkeeper has suffered a hairline fracture in his hand.

Unai Emery admitted that Aston Villa have lost the element of surprise that powered them to the Champions League places last season, after his side’s troubling winless run was extended to eight matches.

Unai Emery is preparing to make a late call on Emi Martinez after confirming the goalkeeper sustained a hairline fracture to a finger in Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at Chelsea.

Emery opted to drop Bailey for Philogene for the trip to Chelsea, but the move didn't work. Perhaps he chose to start Philogene because of his ability to help out in a defensive capacity - as seen in his excellent display against Bayern Munich - and also to manage Bailey's minutes at the start of this hectic period of the campaign.

"At the beginning of the season, we can sense some teams were better than us and one of them is Chelsea. We try to keep the balance and not be frustrated. "We are going to try again to recover our confidence for Wednesday against Brentford."
