Starbucks barista strike expands nationwide days after NYC Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s boycott call
The Starbucks union says its strike has expanded to over 30 locations throughout the country, with the latest work stoppage hitting a store in Albany, NY, days after after New York City’s socialist Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani called for a boycott of the chain.
Still no Iowa locations are listed as participating in open-ended strike to protest stalled labor negotiations with the company.
Starbucks has unveiled a new holiday-themed beverage; however, customers can't get it at regular, standalone coffeehouses. The coffee chain told USA TODAY the Frozen Peppermint Hot Chocolate is available beginning Nov. 18 exclusively at Starbucks locations in Target stores. Target Circle 360 members got early access to the drink on Nov. 17.
On November 14, 2025, more than 1,000 Starbucks workers staged a coordinated walkout at 65 locations across 40+ U.S. cities, deliberately timing their action to coincide with Red Cup Day—one of the company's most profitable promotional events.
