Namibia’s president-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah won more than 57 percent of the votes cast with her close rival Panduleni Itula of the IPC getting 26 percent.

With this win, not only as Namibia elected its first female president but also maintained the South West Africa People’s Organisation's 34-year stronghold across the nation.

Across southern Africa, political parties that have led their countries since the end of colonialism have ceded power to the opposition in recent months. Namibia bucked the trend.
