Roger Handberg, who since 2021 has served as the top federal prosecutor for the region that includes Tampa Bay, has resigned, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida said U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg is departing from his position.

According to the Justice Department, he is known for his expertise in investigating and prosecuting public corruption and white-collar crime cases

A new presidential administration brings a changing of the guard in the Middle District of Florida. The Department of Justice announced Tuesday that U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg is leaving his post. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Sara C. Sweeney will serve as the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida in his stead.

When asked about the departure, a DOJ spokesperson said U.S. Attorneys serve at the pleasure of the President. The departure comes amid the firings of various high-ranking officials at the DOJ

U.S. Attorney Roger B. Handberg, who oversaw an uptick in white-collar crime prosecutions in Northeast Florida, is the latest federal prosecutor appointed during President Joe Biden's term to be dismissed from his role.
