Interestingly, while the lipid-rich livers are thought to be the primary target of these attacks, there was no photographic evidence of the orcas consuming it. In fact, no photos have ever been taken of this happening.

Whale sharks are gentle, filter-feeding giants, but orcas in Mexican waters were documented attacking the animals and devouring their livers.

In the attacks, caught on video between 2018 and 2024, the orcas killed young whale sharks that gathered in the Gulf of California to feed.
