West Nile virus cases are on the rise across the country as mosquito season begins, according to public health officials. The Arkansas Department of Health is currently reporting fewer than five cases of the virus.

To prevent West Nile, health experts recommend using insect repellent and avoiding going outdoors during dusk and dawn, as mosquitoes are the most active during those times.

Two people in Fremont County have died in recent cases related to West Nile Virus. According to state data, a total of three Coloradans have now died this year after contracting West Nile Virus. Last year, the state saw no deaths. But in 2023, 51 people died in a year that saw hundreds more cases than is typical.
