Antarctica’s freshwater lakes are in trouble. Hidden below the ice of Antarctica’s Lake Fryxell are alien-looking structures made of layers of microbes built up over tens of thousands of years. Now they’re threatened by climate change, with the ice above them rapidly thinning.
